Fall 2007 Official Selection

This year One Picture Book, One Community celebrates its fifth anniversary with the selection of Bob and Otto by the late Robert Bruel, illustrated by his son, Nick Bruel.

Happy Bookday!
More than 20,000 copies of Bob and Otto will be distributed to first graders, their teachers, reading specialists and school libraries throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Bob and Otto follows the fates of two friends who occupy separate but overlapping worlds. Bob, a caterpillar, wants to climb trees, while Otto, a worm, enjoys burrowing underground. After reuniting, the two friends are able to accept their differences and celebrate their contribution to nature’s harmony.

Nick Bruel is an artist-illustrator, and an author. He is also the author of the children’s books,
Bad Kitty, Boing!, and Who is Mervin Bubble?.

Little Cliff and the Porch People by Clifton Taulbert

This year's One Picture Book, One Community selection Little Cliff and the Porch People by Clifton Taulbert is the story of Little Cliff and the friends he makes when he sets out to buy the butter his grandma needs to make her candied sweet potatoes. Though he's warned not to stop along the way, he's too polite not to greet each and every neighbor as he passes their porches, taking the ingredients they offer when they hear about the dish grandma is cooking. Of course, the "porch people" are going to want a taste of those sweet potatoes too. Little Cliff is illustrated by E. B. Lewis, whose watercolors evoke the Southern neighborhood where Taulbert grew up in the 1950s.
